Horsetooth Reservoir - Fort Collins CO
Horsetooth Reservoir (locally known as Horsetooth) is a large reservoir in southern Larimer County, Colorado, just west of the city of Fort Collins, Colorado. The reservoir sits in the foothills above the town on the western side of the Dakota Hogback, which contains the reservoir along its eastern side. The reservoir runs north-south for approximately 6.5 miles and is approximately one-half mile wide. It was constructed in 1949 by the Bureau of Reclamation as part of its federal Colorado-Big Thompson Project or "C-BT".
The average temperature in Horsetooth is colder than most comparable lakes in the area because the water comes through the Colorado-Big Thompson Project pipeline from a very cold Grand Lake.
The Horsetooth Dam closes the northern end of the reservoir, with a height of 155 feet.
Horsetooth is approximately 1900 acres and provides quality fishing for walleye, smallmouth bass, Rainbow and Cut-bow trout. Anglers may also catch white bass, crappie, bluegill, and perch.
Regulations Horsetooth Reservoir:
Walleye: Daily limit of 5 total (no size restriction)
Smallmouth and largemouth bass: Daily limit of 5 total (size minimum is 12 inches; all bass in possession must be over 12 inches)
All species of trout in Horsetooth (rainbow, cut-bow, brown): Daily statewide limit of 4 total (no size restriction)
White bass, striped bass or wipers: Daily statewide limit of 10 total (no size restriction)
Panfish (including bluegill, white and black crappie, and all sunfish): Daily statewide limit of 20 total
(no size restriction)
Fishing is prohibited in inlet March 15 - May 31
A daily County Parks Pass is required and is available on-site.
Horsetooth Reservoir is located just west of Fort Collins and it is a gorgeous lake. From I-25, go west on Harmony Road 7 mi. to where it becomes CR 38E at Taft Hill Road. Continue west 4 more miles on CR 38E to park entrance.
Horsetooth Reservoir offers about six and one-half miles of fishing water. Horsetooth has abundant numbers of small mouth bass, large trout, and walleyes.
Directions to Horsetooth Reservoir
From Denver:

Take I-25 north to the Harmony Road/Timnath exit (#265).

Turn left (west) continuing on Harmony Road for 7 miles where it becomes County Road 38E at the Taft Hill Road intersection.

Continue west on County Road 38E approximately 4 more miles to the entrance at the south end of the Reservoir.
The entrance to South Bay (including campground, Group Pavilion, and swim beach) is at the south end of the reservoir. Watch for signs. To get to Inlet Bay (including Inlet Bay Marina and Inlet Bay Campground), continue west on 38E 1 3/4 miles past the South Bay entrance. Watch for signs and turn right on Shoreline Drive.

From Highway 34 (Eisenhower) go north on Wilson. Wilson becomes Taft Hill Road in Fort Collins. Turn left (west) onto County Road 38E and continue west to the reservoir.
